Rebuild the patriarchal family
Read Genesis 11:26-32; 21:1-5; 22:20-23; 25:19-26; and 35:23-26. Draw Terah’s three named sons, then trace Abraham to Isaac and Jacob. Connect Rebekah through Nahor and Bethuel. Add mothers to Jacob’s children rather than arranging everyone as a single unbranched list.
Find the detail on the chart, identify what each number measures, and record the source used for your explanation.
Practice questions and explained answers
Try the worksheet first. Tap a question to reveal its explanation.
1. How is the 130-year Terah-Abraham interval obtained?
The combined reading uses Terah’s 205 years and Abram’s departure age of 75 after Terah’s death: 205 - 75 = 130. Genesis 11:26 alone does not state Abram’s birth order.
2. Are Abram and Abraham separate people?
No. Genesis 17:5 gives the name change. Sarai and Sarah likewise refer to one woman in the narrative.
3. How many years separate Ishmael’s and Isaac’s births?
Fourteen in the stated sequence: Abraham is 86 at Ishmael’s birth and 100 at Isaac’s birth.
4. How is Rebekah related to Isaac through their fathers?
She is his first cousin once removed: her father Bethuel is the son of Isaac’s uncle Nahor. Adams’ second-cousin label should not replace the traced relationship.
5. What do Isaac’s 40, 60, and 180 measure?
His age at marriage, age at the twins’ birth, and total lifespan. They answer three separate questions.
6. Why must Dinah remain visible in a family summary?
A count of twelve sons is not a count of all Jacob’s children. Genesis names Dinah as a daughter.
